Manitou Springs was established in the early 1870s and became a popular tourist destination based on the reputation that water from its mineral springs would promote healing and provide amazing health benefits. The Native Americans that first inhabited the area also referred to the bubbles from these natural springs as sacred breath from the gods. Every day of the year, tourists from all over the world can be found wondering up and down Manitou Avenue, enjoying the healing springs, shopping at the local boutiques, dining at the exquisite restaurants and experiencing the nightlife and historical culture. There are an abundance of things to do in Manitou Springs. One of the most notorious activities is accepting the challenge of the Manitou Incline, an intense vertical hike, gaining nearly 2000 feet of elevation in just over 4600 feet of total distance.
